Effects of physical exercise on patients' sleep

Abstract

Introduction and Objectives: this study was done to assess the  effects of physical exercise on sleep of hospitalized orthopedic patients in cast and having traction,  in selected centers in Tehran, during the years 1374-75.
Materials and Methods: The study participants were 40 hospitalized males 20-60 years old. 
Results:  80% of patients had difficulty falling asleep,  75% experienced frequent awakening, and 52.5% awakened  early . Physical exercise was associated with sleep  improvement in all patients (p<0.001).  
Discussion and Conclusions: Physical exercise should be promoted in hospitalized patients in order to improve their sleep.
