                <TitleE>Assessment of the Prevalence of Risky Behaviors Among Accident-Involved Drivers Admitted to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Urmia, 2021 - 2022</TitleE>

                        <CONTENT>Background :Road traffic accidents and the resulting injuries and deaths remain major public health concerns worldwide. These incidents not only threaten human life but also impose substantial social and economic burdens on health care systems and national economies. Objectives :This study aimed to assess the prevalence of risky driving behaviors among drivers involved in accidents who were admitted to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Urmia during 2021 - 2022. Methods :This descriptive-analytical study was conducted using census sampling among drivers hospitalized due to traffic accidents at Imam Khomeini Hospital in Urmia during 2021 - 2022. Demographic characteristics and behavioral data were collected using a structured checklist. After data collection, the data were entered into SPSS version 18 and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Results :The mean age of the drivers was 42.07 ± 14.83 years. Most participants were male (76.8%, n = 556) and married (67.3%, n = 487). Regarding educational level, 43.1% (n = 312) had a diploma or lower level of education. Regarding driving behaviors, 69.3% (n = 502) reported wearing seat belts, 64.9% (n = 470) reported not using mobile phones while driving, and 57.7% (n = 418) reported not listening to music while driving. In addition, most participants reported no alcohol consumption (81.8%, n = 592) and no drug use (84.4%, n = 611). More than half of the accidents resulted in no physical injuries (53.9%, n = 390). Statistical analysis showed a significant association between injury severity and demographic variables, including age, sex, marital status, and educational level. Conclusions :The findings indicate that accident-involved drivers who exhibit high-risk behaviors are predominantly middle-aged men with relatively lower educational levels. Given the observed association between injury severity and demographic factors, identifying key risk factors and addressing them through targeted interventions and safety education programs may help reduce risky driving behaviors and promote adherence to traffic safety regulations.</CONTENT>
