Abstract

Introduction and Objectives: Since cyanide is a strong inhibitor of cytochrome oxidase and metabolism , we need to know whether it is useful in increasing cardiac resistance to ischemia.

Materials and Methods: Male rats received either 1.7mg/kg potassium cyanide or normal saline transperitoneally for 35 days. Then, isolated hearts were examined at baseline, during ischemia and after return to normal perfusion state..

Results: Coronary blood flow, left ventricular pressure and contractility (dp/dt) were similar in two groups, but at  ischemic state (p<0.005) and at recovery to normal   state(p<0.05)   there were  statistically significant differences in left ventricular pressure and contractility (dp/dt) between the two groups.

Discussion and Conclusions: It seams that cyanide induce cardiac resistance to ischemic effects in rats.
