The effect of prednisolone pill on swelling and taking of analgesic tablets after surgery of impacted wisdom teeth

Background: Impaction of wisdom teeth is accompanied with some complications. Because of fear, anxiety and the complications after surgery, patients avoid surgery. Objective: To evaluate oral pill predinsolone effects on decreasing swelling and number of analgesic tablets used after surgical removal of the impacted wisdom teeth of mandible. Methods: Through a double blind clinical trial in Qazvin faculty of dentistry (1997), 16 patients (2 women, 14 men) with symmetric impacted wisdom teeth of mandible were selected. In one side, the surgery was done by using of prednisolone 50 mg 12 hours before and 12 hours after surgery and in the other side, by using of multivitamin 50 mg as placebo under the same conditions and then two sides were compared and analyzed statistically about swelling and used analgesic tablets. Findings: Prednisolone caused 56.8% , 58.7% and 39.4% reduction in swelling during the first, third and seventh day, respectively. In the study side, maximum swelling was noticed on the firstday and minimum on the seventh day after the surgery. In general, prednisolone resulted in 52.6% reduction in face swelling. On both sides, there were significant correlation between number of analgesic tablets used during the first seven days and duration of the surgery. This study showed that any increase in the surgery duration may result in an increase in the number of analgesic tablets used during the first seven days, in addition, a significant correlation was realized between the intensity of pain after the surgery and the surgery duration. More over, number of analgesic tablets in study side during the first seven days was less than control side.
