Abstract

Introduction: The mothers of children with cleft lip/palate have faced different problems since their child birth which affect their lives. The aim of this study was to Compare Cognitive Emotional Regulation Strategies between Mothers of Children with Cleft Lip/Palate and Mothers of Normal Children.

Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 mothers in 2 groups which were collected by using convenience sampling. The first group consisted of 100 mothers who have children with cleft lip/palate or both. The second group was 100 mothers who have normal children that were selected by using cloning techniques. Data was gathered by Persian version of cognitive emotional regulation questionnaire. The independent t-test was performed by SPSS software version 22.

Results: The mean negative and positive scores of emotional regulation in mothers with cleft lip/palate children were 58.7 and 57.81 and, in mothers who have normal children were 40.47 and 63.88. Mothers who have children with cleft lip/palate used more negative emotional regulation than another group. Between two groups there was a significant difference between positive and negative scores of emotional regulation (p < 0.001).

Conclusion: The result demonstrated that mothers who have children with cleft lip/palate or both have more negative and lower positive score in emotional regulation compare to mothers in another group. So the psychological well-being is very important for compatibility with changes, stressors.
