Will I be charged?
Nothing is charged unless your manuscript is accepted. There is no submission fee, and no charge if your manuscript is declined.
Editorial decisions are made solely on scientific merit by the journal's editors and reviewers. Neither the ability to pay an article processing charge nor an application for a waiver has any influence on peer review or on the decision to accept or reject a manuscript.
Corrections, expressions of concern and retraction notices are free to publish and free to read in every Brieflands journal. Editorials are free of charge in almost every Brieflands journal. A later correction or retraction does not change the charge for the original article. The table above is generated from the journals’ live price list, so it always shows the current position for each article type. Journals that are platinum open access carry no author charge at all.
How the charge is calculated
Article processing charges at Brieflands are calculated per word. The price shown above is the standard charge for a manuscript of the stated word count. Longer manuscripts cost proportionally more, and shorter ones less. Full details are in the Word Count Policy.
Charges are quoted in euros and exclude VAT and any bank transfer costs. There are no colour charges and no extra page charges. The only charge beyond the standard fee is for words above the standard word count, at the per-word rate shown in the table above. The exact amount for your manuscript is confirmed at payment and in your journal account.
Waivers and discounts
We would rather publish good work than turn it away over cost. Brieflands uses the Research4Life country list to decide who is eligible for a waiver of the article processing charge.
- Authors from Research4Life countries — authors based in a Research4Life Group A country receive a 50% waiver, and authors based in a Group B country receive a 25% waiver. Eligibility depends on the country of the corresponding author's institution. The current list of countries is on the Research4Life website.
- Active reviewers — reviewers earn NeoReward points for completed review assignments. The points can be turned into a NeoReward coupon code worth up to 30% of the article processing charge, valid for 6 months. Enter the code during submission, as described in Coupon Code.
When and how to apply: a waiver is applied only on request. Apply after submission and before a final decision, by submitting a support ticket with your manuscript ID. Each request is reviewed individually, and we tell you the outcome within 1–2 working days.
Waiver requests are decided by the publishing office, not by the journal's editors or reviewers. Asking for a waiver has no effect on how a manuscript is reviewed or whether it is accepted.
Withdrawal
Brieflands does not charge a withdrawal fee. A manuscript may be withdrawn at any stage before final publication, including at Ahead of Print, and no fee is charged for the withdrawal itself. The full procedure is set out in the Withdrawal Regulations.
If you withdraw your manuscript before final publication, including at Ahead of Print, you pay nothing. We cancel any open invoice. If you have already paid, we refund the full amount. Request a refund through the support portal. This applies to withdrawals requested from 5 October 2026.
After publication, withdrawal is no longer possible. A published article may only be corrected or retracted under the Retraction Regulations.
Refunds
Because authors are invoiced only after acceptance, no payment is made while a manuscript is under review, and there is nothing to refund if a manuscript is rejected.
Where a charge has already been paid and the article is subsequently withdrawn, a refund may be requested through the support portal. No refunds are available once the article has been published. Reprints are not included in the article processing charge and are ordered separately.
