Abstract

Background: Cisplatin nephrotoxicity is a major limiting factor in patients with solid tumors.

Objectives: We prospectively evaluated the nephroprotective effect of atorvastatin in humans receiving cisplatin.

Methods: Thirty patients, candidates for cisplatin administration, were included. Group 1 received atorvastatin 40 mg/d one hour
before cisplatin administration and continued for 7 days. Group 2 received placebo/d, starting 1 hour before cisplatin and continued
for 7 days. Blood samples were collected for BUN, creatinine, magnesium, and potassium on days 8 ,0, and 21 after receiving cisplatin.

Results: Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) changes between the two groups on the 8th day showed a statistically significant decrease
in the placebo group (GFR decreases from 27.96 ± 77.22 to 19.9 ± 64.25 with P-value = 0.016), but not in the atorvastatin group (GFR
decreases from 19.73 ± 69.59 to 21.43 ± 64.23 with P-value = 0.125).

Conclusion: Atorvastatin may have a reno-protective effect.
