Abstract

Background:One of the common problems of children with learning disabilities is weakness in visual-motor skills, which causes them to face various problems in school and life. Objectives:The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of Tele-occupational therapy on visual-motor skills in children with specific learning disorder.

Materials:

The study method in this research was randomized clinical trial, which was carried out in a single-blind (The evaluator was unaware of the allocation of participants), pre-post-test design with a control and follow-up for two months in primary school children with specific learning disorder. Forty children who met the criteria for entering the research were selected from the learning disorder center of Jannat Abad, Tehran, and divided into two intervention and control groups using the random blocks method. The pre-test was conducted by the Test of Visual-Motor Skills-Revised (TVMS-R) on both groups, and then the intervention group, in addition to the common training in the special learning disorder center, received Tele-occupational therapy interventions for 16 sessions of 45 minutes twice a week. The control group received only the common education in the center. After the end of the intervention, the post-test was performed on both groups. And after 2 months, both groups were followed up.

Results:

The mean age of the students in the intervention group was 8.6 ± 0.95 and in the control group was 8.5 ± 0.90. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the two experimental and control groups in the total score of visual-motor skills test or TVMS-R (89.2 ± 5.5 vs. 98.2 ± 8.7) (P < 0.001) and these results were maintained in the follow-up period.

Conclusions:

The present study showed that Tele-occupational therapy improves visual motor skills in children with specific learning disorder in elementary school.
