Abstract

In most references, diamond medium is introduced as one of the best diagnostic methods for
Trichomonas vaginalis (Tv), however preparation of this medium is complicated and expensive.
A total of 597 vaginal specimens from women, referred to gynecology clinic in Quds maternity
hospital of Zahedan, were examined by ongoing three methods including, Wet smear, Dorset
medium, Diamond medium.
Twenty-eight cases (4.5%), 33 cases (5.3%), 36 cases (5.7%) out of 597 samples were detected
by Wet smear, Dorset and Diamond culture media, respectively. The sensitivity of Wet smear and
Dorset medium against Diamond medium was 75% and 83.3%, respectively. McNemar test showed
no statistical difference between Dorset and diamond culture.
It was concluded that the Dorset medium is preferable to the other methods studied here.
Considering the facilities of the clinical centers and laboratories, this method is recommended to be
used routinely for the diagnosis of T.v in clinical samples.
