Causes of hospitalization in Avicina Teaching Center
Background: Evaluation of the causes of hospitalization in teaching hospitals can lead to development of these centers and better education planning. Objective: To determine the causes of hospitalization in Avicina teaching hospital. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted from 1993 to 1996. Medical records of 1406 cases were randomly selected, diagnosed and classified according to ICD9. Findings: 58.4% of the hospitalized cases were male with the mean age of 49.2. 52.6% of the cases were hospitalized on emergency basis. The length of stay was highest in ICU ward (9.3 days) and lowest in infectious ward (6.92 days). The causes of hospitalization was as follows: circulatory disorders (36.3%), digestive disorders (13.9%), infectious diseases (9.9%), mental disorders (8%) and respiratory disorders (6.8%). Conclusion: This research reveals a clear picture of causes of hospitalization and length of stay. Further research can lead to better educational programming and a reform in hospitalization and treatment.
