The effect of dietary education upon the level of blood sugar of patients with NIDDM
Abstract
Background: Dietary modification is one of the most important elements in the therapeutic plan of patients with NIDDM.
Objective: To evaluate the efficiency of dietary education upon the level of fasting blood sugar of NIDDM patients.
Methods: In a semi – experimental clinical trail, 74 NIDDM patients were radomly classified into two groups as :experimental (38) and control (36).The experimental group received dietary education by the use of portrait, lecture and question and answer in three sessions .The level of fasting blood sugar of both groups was evaluated one week before and after the experiment.
Findings: The findings indicated that the majority of patients were female (74.32%), house wives (71.62%) and in the age range of 50 to 59. There was no significant difference in the level of fasting blood sugar of the patients before the experiment (t=1.78) in which the percentage decreased in the experimental group after experiment (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Dietary education is a suitable method in decreasing the blood sugar of diabetic patients.
