Abstract

Abstract Background: Nutritional concepts of high-school girls as future mothers will have an important role in family and child health. Objective: To assess the nutritional knowledge of senior high-school girls in Tabriz. Methods: In a descriptive study and through simple random sampling, nutritional knowledge of 404 girls from all educational areas of Tabriz city was studied in 1996. All subjects were in the age range of 16 to 20. Findings: More than 80% of the subjects knew that anemia is a disease. Only 6.8% of participants responded that vitamin is a nutrient and 49% were not sure that plants do not have any protein. On the bases of likerts method, 5.2%, 51% and 43.8% had low, moderate and desirable knowledge, respectively. There were not any significant relationship between their knowledge score and educational area, age, mothers’ education and course of study. Conclusion: Development of educational programs and strategies are needed for reaching optimum nutritional knowledge in high-school girls.
