Comparison of the results of color doppler sonography and venography in deep vein thrombosis diagnosis
Authors
Abstract
Abstract Background: Regarding the prevalence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and it’s serious complications and side effects finding a noninvasive, sensitive and quick diagnostic method seems to be necessary. Objective: To compare the results of color Doppler sonography and venography as a primary diagnostic method for DVT so as to give a practical guideline to screen the patients. Methods: Through an interventional study a total number of 45 patients suspected to DVT were assessed with color Doppler sonography and then contrast venography was done and finally findings were compared by Chi square test (1996-97). Findings: The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of color Doppler sonography for femoral and popliteal thrombosis is comparable with venography (100%) while in calf DVT, color Doppler sonography has less sensitivity (23%) compared with venography (100%). Ruptured baker cyst and calf muscle hematomas can not be diagnosed by venography, but color Doppler sonography has very high sensitivity and specificity. Conclusion: The findings indicate that color Doppler sonography can be a primary noninvasive and quick diagnostic method & can replace venography on DVT diagnosis.
