Abstract

Background: Colonoscopy has complications and some effects on cardiorespiratory System. Many studies showed different effects, of Colonoscopy on hemodynamic parameters. The presence of a cardiorespiratory disease and or premedications, interfere with these parameters. Objective: To define the effects of Colonoscopy on heart rate, arterial O2 saturation, arterial Systolic blood pressure and arterial diastolic blood pressure. Methods: A quazi experimental study was performed on 30 patients without previous cardio respiratory disease referred to endoscopic ward of Boo Ali hospital for elective diagnostic colonoscopy in year 2002. Hemodynamic parameters were observed and recorded before, every 60 second during and then 3 min after colonoscopy. Findings: From 30 patients, 20 patients were male and 10 patients were female. Range of age was between 17 and 80 years. The assess average time with colonoscopy was 4.86 min. Mean of arterial O2 saturation, heart rate, SBP and DBP in different times and anatomic locations during colonoscopy were compared with colonoscopy initiation. There were no observable clinical change in mentioned parameters during colonoscopy. Conclusions: Colonoscopy without premedication, has no significant clinical effect on physiologic parameters.
