Abstract

Background: Although the vast majority of the lesions that occur in the breast are benign, breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women. Because the majority of benign lesions are not associated with an increased risk for subsequent breast cancer, close examination of lesions before making any decision to do surgical procedures is of utmost significance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Concordance between Breast Ultrasound Reports, Based BIRAD System with Ultrasound Guided FNA in Breast Lesions.

Methods: This study is a cross-sectional one. The study population were women who referred to the radiology department of Moatazedi Hospital of Kermanshah as the results of having localized pain or palpable mass in their breast. Data were analyzed employing chi-square test and Kappa agreement and descriptive statistics.

Results: The mean age of the patients, was 42±10.5 years. Chi square test results showed that the breast sonographic reports, based on BIRAD category, and FNA reports were concordant. Besides, Kappa agreement test showed concordance between breast sonographic reports and breast FNA reports. The agreement between sonographic reports of Breast lesions with Fine needle aspiration results was 95.7 %.

Conclusions: The results of this study indicated the high concordance between breast sonographic reports, based on BIRAD category, and FNA findings. Thus, ultrasound can be a cost-effective, easy and available method to determine breast lesions and simplify patient's management.
