Abstract

Background: Leukaemia is a chronic disease with unknown cause whose treatment is included various stages such as bone marrow transplantation. Some research accredited the role of quality of life before transplantation in physical well-being after BMT. The purpose of the present research was to study the relation between quality of life dimensions and physical well-being of post-BMT in patients with acute leukaemia.
Methods: In this survey research, 58 patients with acute leukaemia (38 men and 20 women) between ages 18-45 years selected during 13 months via census procedure. Then, the subjects' quality of life was assessed before BMT and their physical well-being were assessed one, two and three months after-BMT. Quality of life and physical well-being after BMT were assessed using SF-36 questionnaire and CBC test. Data was analyzed using univariate and regression analysis.
Results: Results showed that some dimensions of quality of life (physical functioning, role limitations due to physical health, energy, social functioning and general health) can predict some dimensions of physical well-being after BMT in patients with acute leukaemia.
Conclusion: Attention to quality of life dimensions prior to BMT accompanying with other treatments appears to be critical for patients' physical well-being after BMT.
