Abstract

Introdution: Acute pyelonephritis is one of the bacteri al infections which is treated th rough injection drugs. As, using IV antibiotics has a lot of exp ens e, thus this study was performed to compare the treatment efficacy of two regimens. IV an d oral regimen and alternating oral instead of IV tre atment. Materials and Methods: This clinical trial study was carried out on 54 patients with acute pyelonephritis without any complication in Fatemieh hospital from Au g. 2002. Randomly each patient was prescribed one of the two regimes: oral ciprotloxacin (Regimen I) and IV Ceft riaxon (Regimen II). Seven pa tients from Regimes I, due to th e incomplet e treatment with th e given medicine were set aside. And the rest o f the cases, 24 , 48 and 72 hours after beginning the treatment were ch ecked for disappearing or continuing the fev er and clinic a l symp toms. Chisqure and t tests were used in the meaningful level of 5% to analyse the data. Results: Age mean and standard deviation for regimen. o ne were 50.40 ± 18.7 and fo r II 33 .2 ± 22.4, showing no meaningful difference statistically. Both regimens were hemogenious from gender distribution. Response to treatment was 95% and 100% respectively and showing no meaningful differen ce statistically. But the duration response mean (st and a rd di viation ) to tre a tmen t in both regimen were 2.67 ± 0.49 days and 1.6 ± 0.63 respectively. And h aving meaningful difference statistically ( P =0.0(0). Conclusion: This study showing that o r a l ciprof!oxa cin is as effec t ive as IV ceftr ia xo n, however, the response speed to treatment has been less .
