Abstract

Introduction: Suicide is one of the social and psychological problems which is being increased due to the complexity of interactions and communications. What is important is prevention, and this is impossible, unless it is detected by its alarming symptoms and managed on time. Materials & Methods: In this research, 383 cases attempted to suicide from 12 Dec 2001 to 11 Dec 2002 and referred to affiliated hospitals of Semnan university of medical sciences in Semnan province, were studied. Personal identification, suicide method and motivation, past history and their somatic or psychotic diseases were recorded in a questionnaire. The required information about the patient’s condition and cooperation was taken from patient or their attendants. Meanwhile, by the forensic medicine, the suicide cases were checked. Results: The age mean for suicide was 24.6 (SD=8.9). 78% were under the age of 30 and the rest 30 or more.61.3% were female. And 38.4% were housewives, 24.1% were student of high school or university students. 33.9% of females and 64.9% males were not married while 61.4% of females and 34.5% of males were married. And 68.5% of the married had at most 2 children. 43.4% had high school certificate. The major motivation for suicide in 48.2% of women and 19.8% of men was matrimony opposition, and 26.4% females and 31.4% males, had family problems. 88.5% of cases used chemicals93% females versus 81% males. Sedatives were the most common drugs taken in suicide in both gender. Suicide led to death was 1% and all were men used the rough methods. And it has been taken place before reaching to hospitals. Conclusion: Findings showed that 78% of suicide actors were under the age of 30 and showing the special attention should be paid to them and their needs ought to be identified. Increasing the consultation centers in all areas is necessary. Meanwhile, the parents should be awarded that these centers are the best place to help them. Fortunately, 99% of the people, who attempted to suicide, were saved. This shows the accuracy and speed action of the emergency wards.
