What is open peer review at Brieflands?
Peer review at Brieflands remains double-anonymised while a manuscript is under review. Open peer review happens only after the editorial decision: the comments of the reviewers, the associate editor and the editor-in-chief, for every revision round, are published together with the authors' point-by-point replies. Readers can see how each article was examined, questioned and improved before publication.
On every article page, the Peer review comments button opens the full report as a single PDF, with a table of contents, each round of review, each reviewer's recommendation, the editorial decisions and the authors' responses.

How reviewers and authors are protected
- Consent first. A reviewer's comments are published only if the reviewer agreed to it. Reviewers who did not agree remain anonymous and their reports are not published.
- Names only when signed. A reviewer is named only if they chose to sign their report; all others appear as "Referee 1", "Referee 2" and so on.
- Language editing only. Before publication, each report is edited for language only. The scientific content, recommendations and decisions are not changed.
- Nothing confidential. Confidential comments to the editors, contact details and editorial-office matters are never published. Every report PDF is scanned for such content before it goes online, and any report that needs a closer look is held for the publishing team.
Open peer review in numbers
Of the 7,617 research articles published in these journals since 2021, 6,068 now have a published open peer review report. By year of publication:
- 2021: 1,103 articles
- 2022: 759 articles
- 2023: 1,034 articles
- 2024: 1,129 articles
- 2025: 1,271 articles
- 2026: 772 articles
For the remaining articles, either none of the reviewers agreed to the publication of their report, or the report is still under final review by the publishing team (95 articles).
Open peer review by journal
Each journal name links to that journal's list of articles with open peer review.
Automatic from now on
From November 2026, the open peer review of every new research article is prepared and checked automatically when the article is published. A report that passes all checks is published the same day; a report that needs attention is held until an editor has reviewed it.
