Article Processing Charges (APC)

Article Processing Charges

Brieflands publishes every journal in an open-access model, so readers pay nothing. Some journals are funded by sponsoring institutions and cost authors nothing either. The rest recover their publishing costs through an article processing charge, payable only after a manuscript has been accepted.

Platinum open access journals

Many Brieflands journals are sponsored by scientific collaborators or institutions and are free for authors. Use the Journal Finder to identify them.

Notices and editorials

Corrections, expressions of concern and retraction notices are free to publish and free to read in every Brieflands journal. Editorials are free of charge in almost every Brieflands journal. A later correction or retraction does not change the charge for the original article. The table above shows the charge for each article type in each journal; where it reads 0, there is no charge.

Full gold open access journals

An article processing charge applies. The amount depends on the journal and on the word count of your manuscript.

Work out what your article will cost

Enter your journal, word count, article type and country, and the calculator returns the exact charge for your manuscript.

Nothing is charged unless your manuscript is accepted.

There is no submission fee, and no charge if your manuscript is declined. Editorial decisions are made solely on scientific merit by the journal's editors and reviewers. Neither the ability to pay an article processing charge nor the granting of a waiver has any influence on peer review or on the decision to accept or reject a manuscript.

How the charge is calculated

Article processing charges at Brieflands are calculated per word. The figures below are the standard charge for a manuscript of 3,500 words. Longer manuscripts cost proportionally more, shorter ones less. Full details are in the Word Count Policy.

  • Charges are quoted in euros and exclude VAT and any bank transfer costs. There are no colour charges and no extra page charges. The only charge beyond the standard fee is for words above the standard word count.
  • Journals not listed below are platinum open access and carry no author charge.
  • The exact amount for your manuscript is confirmed at payment and in your journal account.

Charges by journal, and your estimate

Prices are read live from our publishing system, so this list is always current. Use the calculator underneath for your exact amount.

The table below lists the charge for every article type in every Brieflands journal, read from the journals’ live price list each time this page is opened. Please note this is an approximation. For an exact fee, log in to the journal system during your payment.

Footnotes:

  1. Prices exclude VAT and bank transfer costs.
  2. The table provides an estimated price; the exact amount is shown during online payment or in your journal account.
  3. For word count guidelines, see our Word Count Policy.

Waivers and discounts

We would rather publish good work than turn it away over cost. Brieflands uses the Research4Life country list to decide who is eligible for a waiver of the article processing charge.

Authors from Research4Life countries

Authors based in a Research4Life Group A country receive a 50% waiver, and authors based in a Group B country receive a 25% waiver. Eligibility depends on the country of the corresponding author's institution. The current list of countries is on the Research4Life website.

Active reviewers

Reviewers earn NeoReward points for completed review assignments. The points can be turned into a NeoReward coupon code worth up to 30% of the article processing charge, valid for 6 months. Enter the code during submission, as described in Coupon Code.

When and how to apply

A waiver is applied only on request. Apply after submission and before a final decision, by submitting a support ticket with your manuscript ID. Each request is reviewed individually, and we tell you the outcome within 1–2 working days.

Waiver requests are decided by the publishing office, not by the journal's editors or reviewers. Asking for a waiver has no effect on how a manuscript is reviewed or whether it is accepted.

How to pay

Preferred

Online payment

Sign in to the journal website and open the Author Area. After acceptance, the corresponding author will see a "Pay Acceptance Fee" button. PayPal and major credit cards are accepted.

Bank transfer

Request a pre-invoice through the support portal, selecting Request Invoice. Pay by IBAN/BIC transfer, then upload the bank receipt to your journal account.

For help with either method, submit a ticket as an author.

Withdrawal

Brieflands does not charge a withdrawal fee. A manuscript may be withdrawn at any stage before final publication, including at Ahead of Print, and no fee is charged for the withdrawal itself.

1
Pre-review
From submission until the manuscript is sent to reviewers. No charge.
2
During peer review
Withdrawal remains available. No charge.
3
After acceptance, before publication
Withdrawal remains available. No charge.
4
After publication
Withdrawal is no longer possible. Published articles may only be corrected or retracted under the Retraction Regulations.

No separate withdrawal penalty fee

Brieflands does not impose a financial penalty merely because an author requests withdrawal. If you withdraw your manuscript before final publication, including at Ahead of Print, you pay nothing. We cancel any open invoice. If you have already paid, we refund the full amount. Request a refund through the support portal. This applies to withdrawals requested from 5 October 2026.

The full procedure is in the Withdrawal Regulations. To request a withdrawal, submit a ticket.

Refunds

Because authors are invoiced only after acceptance, no payment is made while a manuscript is under review, and there is nothing to refund if a manuscript is rejected.

1
Before publication
Where a charge has already been paid and the manuscript is withdrawn before publication, we refund the full amount. Request it through the support portal. This applies to withdrawals requested from 5 October 2026.
2
After publication
No refunds are available once the article has been published.

Common questions

Which articles are published free of charge?

Corrections, expressions of concern and retraction notices are free in every journal. Editorials are free in almost every journal, and all articles in platinum open access journals are free. The table above is generated from the journals’ live price list, so it always shows the current position for each article type. Invited authors should contact us through the support portal.

Will I be charged if my manuscript is rejected?

No. You are invoiced only for accepted articles. Acceptance is decided through peer review, on the scientific merit of the work.

Are reprints included in the charge?

No. Reprints are ordered separately. Open the article page and select "Order Reprint", or ask through the support portal.

Who do I contact about an invoice?

All billing questions go through the support portal. Select Request Invoice for a pre-invoice, or Submit a Ticket as Author for anything else.
