Abstract

Background: Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal abnormality due to 21 trisomy that usually is accompany with congenital heart diseases. About fifty present of children with Down syndrome have heart defects. This study was designed for the aim of abundance percents of septal heart defects in children with Down syndrome at Imam Reza and Imam Ali hospitals in Kermanshah.
Methods: This study was down for 89 patients with Down syndrome. Data’s were achieved by echocardiography results and files of patients admitted at Imam Reza and Imam Ali hospitals during 2002 – 2011 in Kermanshah. Data’s were included septal defects, age, sex, history of mother,s abortion, pregnant mother,s age, patients mortality, parent,s relative and history of family diseases.
Results: Ventricular and atrial septal defect respectively were 15 patients [9 girls (10.1%) and 6 boys (6.74%)] and 11 cases [6 girls (6.74%) and 5 boys (5.6%)]. History of parents heart diseases was 22 [13 mothers (14.6%) and 9 fathers (10.11%)], 10 patients (11.2%) were dead and parent,s relative were 53 cases (59.6%). History of mother,s abortion was 17 (19.3%). The most incidence was in mother,s age (between 21-30 age years old) include 35 cases (39.32%).
Conclusion: Abundance percents of ventricular septal defects were more than atrial septal defects and were related to sex. On the other hand these defects were more in children of mothers with family relative, low ages (under twenties and also between 21-30 years age old), history of heart diseases and also history of abortions.
