Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of clinical symptoms and antimicrobial sensitivity of shigella in children in Mofid Hospital. Methods: This survey was conducted on 63 patients having positive stool culture during 1995-97. Findings: 77.4% of these patients had vomiting and 36.5% had seizure. The most common signs were diarrhea and fever (98.4%). The patients were 98.5% resistant to CO-Trimoxazole and 84.6% to Ampicillin. Only 10% were resistant to Nalidixic Acid. Conclusion: According to low resistance of shigella species to Nalidixic Acid, the use of Nalidixic Acid is recommended as a first choice in treatment of shigellosis.
