Preface
Mammalian sperm possess a complex structure, with significant correlations between sperm structure and functionality being explored extensively. Numerous studies have documented sequential changes in sperm components from their production during spermatogenesis to fertilization and embryo formation. Advanced microscopy techniques, such as light and electron microscopy, alongside immunohistochemistry methods utilizing specific probes like antibodies against sperm components, have significantly contributed to this research.
In addition, genetic manipulation techniques and studies on molecular interactions controlling sperm structure and composition have progressed. Animal models with induced genetic mutations have revealed abnormal morphology and functionality associated with male infertility. In humans, male infertility can arise from diverse factors, including environmental conditions, mutagenic agents, and diet-related genotoxins. These factors not only impact the development of germ cells during spermatogenesis but also affect the functionality of mature sperm, ultimately disrupting fertilization and embryonic development.
This book delves into the dynamics of mammalian sperm, focusing on events that occur in the sperm head from its formation during spermatogenesis to oocyte activation. It examines cellular processes, their successful outcomes, and their failures, offering a comparative analysis of animal models, human infertility cases, and natural fertilization processes.
