Why XML matters more than it looks
A PDF is a picture of an article; XML is the article itself, in a form software can parse — every author, affiliation, reference, table, and figure individually tagged. That is what makes reference linking, citation tracking, accessibility, and long-term format migration possible. Brieflands produces full text and metadata in NLM/JATS-conformant XML, the established standard for scholarly journal content.
XML is an eligibility requirement, not a luxury. PubMed Central, for example, does not accept articles in HTML format: full text must be delivered as XML conforming to an accepted journal article DTD, together with high-resolution figures and the PDF. A journal without an XML workflow cannot complete PMC's technical evaluation — whatever the quality of its content.
