Hands-on training in the statistical software researchers actually use — SPSS, STATA, Minitab, LISREL, MATLAB and G-Power — delivered by Brieflands for postgraduate students, clinicians and research staff. Every course below ran as a small-group, in-person session.

Statistics is not only a discipline in its own right but a working tool across the sciences. These sessions covered both descriptive and inferential analysis, with the software treated as the means rather than the subject.

SPSS — Basic Level

An introduction to statistical analysis in SPSS, covering descriptive and inferential approaches and the role of statistical software in each. The stated aim is to leave participants able to work independently in SPSS.

Prerequisites: basic Windows skills and familiarity with statistical concepts and hypothesis testing. Sessions: 23 April 2015, and as a scheduled open course.

SPSS — Advanced Level

The advanced counterpart to the basic course, taking participants beyond routine descriptive work into more demanding analysis in SPSS.

Prerequisites: basic Windows skills, statistical concepts and hypothesis testing. Sessions: 29 January 2015, and as a scheduled open course.

SPSS — Survival Analysis

Survival analysis has become one of the most widely used methods in medical research. This session covered survival distributions and the analysis of time-to-event data — the interval between two defined events, whether measured in years, months or weeks, and whether the event is death, disease onset, relapse or remission.

SPSS — Validity and Reliability of Questionnaires

Measurement is unavoidable in research, and any instrument must satisfy two conditions: validity, meaning it measures what it was built to measure, and reliability, meaning it does so consistently. The session defined the types of each, then worked through the indices and how to compute them in SPSS.

STATA — Basic Level

An introduction to STATA for descriptive and inferential analysis, aimed at leaving participants able to work in the software unaided.

STATA — Advanced Level

Minitab — Statistical Analysis of Industrial Data

Statistical analysis applied to industrial and process data in Minitab, aimed at participants from engineering and technical fields.

LISREL — Structural Equation Modelling

Specialist topicMultivariate methods

Structural equation modelling is a general and powerful multivariate technique — an extension of the general linear model that allows a set of regression equations to be tested simultaneously. The session treated it as a quantitative framework carrying a study from theory through to the analysis of empirical data.

G-Power — Sample Size Estimation in Medical Studies

Sample size estimation using non-parametric methods, in comparative tests, and through transformation methods, extending to advanced procedures: analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, linear and logistic regression, factor analysis and structural equation models. The software itself was taught alongside the methods.

MATLAB — Introductory Course

Mathematics has always served as a tool across the sciences, and MATLAB is among the most capable yet approachable environments for modelling, visualisation and solving mathematical equations. This introductory course covered the essentials for students of basic sciences, engineering, experimental and laboratory disciplines.
