Fatty liver is a buildup of fat in the liver that can lead to inflammation and liver damage. It is a common and growing problem, affecting up to 25% of people worldwide
Understanding Fatty Liver
One of the liver's essential functions is to store and metabolize fats in the body. A healthy liver typically contains about 5 grams of pure fat per 100 grams of its weight. When the fat content in the liver exceeds 5% of its weight, it is referred to as "fatty liver."
Fatty liver is a common condition caused by various factors, including diseases or malnutrition. The accumulation of fat in liver cells can lead to inflammation and damage. Contributing factors include certain medications, obesity or overweight, physical inactivity, and alcohol consumption. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming increasingly prevalent due to modern lifestyle changes in diet and physical activity.
NAFLD is often a silent disease, with no specific symptoms in its early stages. However, its presence indicates a metabolic dysfunction that increases the risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. Raising awareness about fatty liver, its causes, and its risk factors is crucial in reducing its prevalence and ensuring timely treatment.
