Coffee and Health: The Truth Behind the Beloved Cup
Is coffee good for the heart? How much is safe? Is caffeine addictive? Volume 6 of the Secrets of a Healthy Society series answers the questions honestly, from the evidence rather than the marketing.
Secrets of a Healthy Society — Volume 6
Coffee and Health: The Truth Behind the Beloved Cup
Hundreds of studies, a great deal of marketing, and no shortage of contradictory advice. Prof. Seyed-Moayed Alavian works through the evidence on coffee — the heart, safe intake, caffeine dependence, pregnancy, and the conditions where caution is warranted — and states plainly what is known and what is not.

About this book
Coffee has been woven into daily life for centuries — morning conversations, academic meetings, long nights. Its origins trace to ninth-century Ethiopia, where the stimulating effect of a brown bean first drew attention; from there it travelled to Yemen and the wider Middle East, then through medieval Europe and Asia to the rest of the world.
What began as a cultural pleasure is now the subject of hundreds of scientific studies in health, nutrition, and chronic disease. Recent data are genuinely mixed: some findings encouraging, others cautionary. Between the volume of information, persistent myths, contradictory advice, and commercial marketing, a clear answer has become hard to locate.
This book aims at exactly that clarity, working from reliable evidence and taking an unbiased look at coffee and health. Is coffee good for the heart? What counts as safe consumption? Is caffeine addictive? Should it be avoided in pregnancy or with particular conditions? Those are the questions it sets out to answer.
What the book covers
Origins and culture
How coffee travelled from the Ethiopian highlands to nearly every country on earth.
Cardiovascular health
What the research does and does not show about coffee and the heart.
Safe intake
How much is reasonable, and how sensitivity differs between individuals.

Whether caffeine is addictive, and what withdrawal actually involves.
When to be cautious
Pregnancy and the specific conditions in which intake should be limited.
Myths and marketing
Separating well-supported findings from claims that serve someone's commercial interest.
Note. This book is general health education, not individual medical advice. Caffeine tolerance varies widely, and recommended limits differ in pregnancy and for people with cardiac arrhythmias, anxiety disorders, reflux, or certain medications. If in doubt about your own intake, ask your clinician.
