Liver Hemoperfusion and Liver Dialysis Methods in Liver Diseases

Last Update: 2 August, 2026 | 21:51

Transplantation remains the definitive treatment for liver failure, but it is costly, complex, and limited by donor supply. This book reviews extracorporeal liver support — hemoperfusion and liver dialysis — as approaches to bridging and supporting patients in acute and chronic liver failure.

Liver Hemoperfusion and Liver Dialysis Methods in Liver Diseases

Transplantation remains the definitive treatment for liver failure — and it is expensive, complex, and rationed by donor supply. Prof. Seyed-Moayed Alavian reviews extracorporeal liver support: hemoperfusion, liver dialysis, and the innovative detoxification approaches now used to support patients in acute and chronic liver failure.

About this book

The liver metabolises nutrients, detoxifies the blood, produces essential proteins and clotting factors, stores energy, and regulates blood glucose. When it fails, the consequences cascade: jaundice, chronic fatigue, abnormal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, and in advanced cases multi-organ failure.

Liver failure may be acute — often from viral infection, drug toxicity, or metabolic disturbance — or chronic, developing gradually from viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, prolonged medication or toxin exposure, and genetic or autoimmune causes.

Transplantation is highly effective but constrained: cost, complexity, donor shortage, rejection risk, lifelong immunosuppression, and the need for continuing medical supervision. That gap has driven sustained work on alternatives — hepatoprotective drugs, cell therapy, tissue engineering, and the detoxification techniques that are this book's focus.

The book examines those extracorporeal support methods alongside the preventive measures that slow progression: lifestyle modification, diet, avoiding alcohol, and controlling diabetes and hypertension.

What the book covers

Liver failure explained

Acute and chronic presentations, their causes, and how the clinical picture develops.

Hemoperfusion

How blood purification through adsorbent columns is applied in liver disease.

Liver dialysis

Extracorporeal support systems and the role they play in bridging to recovery or transplant.

Limits of transplantation

Donor shortage, rejection, immunosuppression, and lifelong monitoring.

Emerging approaches

Hepatoprotective agents, cell therapy, and tissue engineering.

Prevention

Lifestyle, diet, alcohol avoidance, and control of diabetes and hypertension.

Note. This book is clinical and educational. Extracorporeal liver support is a specialist hospital intervention delivered by hepatology and intensive care teams; it is not a treatment patients can seek or arrange independently, and the evidence base for individual systems continues to evolve. Anyone with liver failure should be managed by a specialist centre.
