Cirrhosis is among the most common and consequential chronic liver diseases: liver cells are gradually destroyed and replaced by fibrotic tissue, changing the organ's structure and steadily reducing its capacity to work. Since the liver is central to carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism, detoxification, bile production, and the storage and regulation of vitamins and minerals, that loss of function has consequences across the whole body.

Patients commonly face malnutrition, loss of muscle mass, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, metabolic disturbance, chronic fatigue, and reduced physical capacity. These do not just affect quality of life; they worsen prognosis and raise the risk of ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, infection, and fractures.
